Why February is My Favorite Month

Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite month of the year? Why?

There’s one month that always feels different to me.  It’s a little colder, a little softer, and somehow filled with both inner warmth and quiet love.  It also happens to be the shortest month of the year — and my favorite: February.

I’ve always been in love with February.  Not just because it’s my birthday month, although that definitely adds a special kind of magic to it.  It’s more that every year, February gives me this feeling I can’t quite put into words.  I celebrate my birthday throughout the entire month, not because I want everything to revolve around me, but because it feels like a season of gratitude, reflection, and joy.

And of course… I love winter.  Cold weather is my absolute favorite. I love bundling up, taking crisp walks outside, and breathing in that air that makes me feel alive and awake.  Sometimes I visit friends in Michigan and get a little taste of real snow — which always adds to the winter magic.

Back in my early twenties, February meant something else too.  My friends and I would rent a cabin in Big Bear — just a short two-hour drive from Los Angeles — to celebrate the cluster of birthdays in our group.  Those trips became some of my most cherished memories.  We’d go sledding, soak in the hot tub, laugh until our stomachs hurt, and spend entire days at a fun zone with tobogganing and inner tubing.  Those weekends were pure joy, the kind of joy you don’t realize you’ll remember forever until you do.

My family used to own a cabin in Big Bear, too.  They sold it when I was a teenager, but the memories never left.  It was one of our regular family destinations, and even now, being up there brings back a flood of warmth and nostalgia. Big Bear will always feel like February to me.

And of course, February is also the “month of love.” Valentine’s Day… well, I’ll be honest: it’s not my favorite. I could skip it completely.  Sure, I love a good Galentine’s celebration, but the holiday itself is definitely geared toward couples, and I’ve never really had a reason to celebrate it romantically.  Still, there’s something sweet about being born in the month that celebrates love — even if I celebrate it my own way.

February is also Aquarius season — and yes, I’m into astrology (but not obsessively).  Aquarians are known for being independent, creative, intuitive, deep-feeling, and a little bit unconventional. I couldn’t be more of an Aquarius if I tried.

February will always hold my heart. It’s nostalgic, cozy, and full of moments that shaped who I am.  It’s a month wrapped in memories, a month I get to celebrate myself, and the only month that leaves me with a lasting glow every single year.

A memory I’ll always cherish.

“February reminds us that even the shortest days can hold the longest-lasting memories.”
