Deep Conversations & Passionate Topics: Connecting Through Interests

Daily writing prompt
What topics do you like to discuss?

When you catch me in a conversation, there’s a good chance you’ll hear me dive into my special interests. I light up talking about things that bring me joy and comfort. As a person on the autism spectrum, I crave topics of genuine interest.

If I’m engaged in something that I find boring or mundane, then I will be incredibly under-stimulated and quite frankly irritated that I must sit through a conversation where I can’t contribute.  When I’m free to discuss my passions, I light up, become giddy, and my mood shifts from boredom to glee.

Baseball, Movies, TV, and Music

It’s safe to say that I’m a baseball fanatic. I grew up watching and going to games with my folks.  My dad is a diehard fan like me, and I blame him for this passion of mine.  I’m a Los Angeles Dodgers fan for life.

Listening to the sweet sounds of Vin Scully coming through the radio, eating the infamous dodger dog, and taking in the sights and smells of the field, baseball has been my world for as long as I can remember, and you will without a doubt see me light up about it.  There is just something so classic and timeless about the game. I can spend hours upon hours discussing the game, the players, and the history of the team.

Movies, TV, and music are right up there too when it comes to topics I enjoy discussing. I love getting list in a great story or powerful song. I enjoy the escapism from reality and being able to unwind and relax with no distractions.

This for me, is a form of self-care.  Being able to take time for yourself and enjoy some of your special interests greatly benefits your mental health.  It reinforces a healthy mindset and generates the endorphins so many of us are left without.

Whether it’s binge-watching your favorite TV show, listening to a new album by a band you love on repeat, or a film you’ve seen numerous times for comfort, these things make my life feel richer and more enjoyable.

Deep, Meaningful Conversations

While I love pop culture, I’m also about having deep philosophical conversations.  Ones in which I discuss life and, and all its mysteries. Sharing the ups and downs, and the answers that don’t always seem to be clear. There is so much value in connecting with others on a deeper level, rather than the surface-level small talk most of us despise. I enjoy delving into topics that bring forth intellectual thoughts, dreams, fears and everything in between.

Special Interests and Personal Passions

Special interests are a huge part of my world.  Reading and writing are at the heart of who I am.  I could talk for hours about a new book I’m reading, or a new article topic that I’m writing for my blog.  These activities give the right kind of stimulation my brain craves.

Travel is another passion of mine.  Even if it’s just dreaming about future trips, I get excited at the thought of venturing to new places. Traveling, as we know, can get expensive, so instead of making it happen, I tend to daydream about it often.

I’ve planned out the places that I want to go, practically set myself an itinerary, and have had wonderful experiences in my mind, hoping that one day it’ll come to fruition. Traveling and exploring new places gives me a sense of freedom.

Freedom to be myself, freedom to live like the locals, and learn about differently cultures. Travel just lights me up and sparks my wildly vivid imagination.

Food and New Restaurants

Last but certainly not least is food.  I could go on and on talking about the latest recipes I’ve found and tried, or the newest restaurant I tried in town.  It’s one topic that brings me immense happiness and passion.

Oh, how I love talking about food! It’s not just about eating, it’s about culture, community, and creativity.  Food is an art form, and it is intricate and complex while also being simple and straightforward.  Every meal has a story to it, and I love being a part of it.

Final Thoughts

Talking about the things that I love not only helps me to express myself but also makes me feel deeply connected to my passions, my identity, and to the people who take the time to listen and engage with me. Whether it’s the latest baseball stats, book recommendations, restaurant reviews, or deep conversations about life.  I’m always excited to share little glimpses into my world with others.
