Why Staying Young at Heart Matters

Daily writing prompt
What does it mean to be a kid at heart?

I’ve always believed there’s something beautiful about holding onto a childlike spirit, even as an adult.  Being a kid at heart doesn’t mean you’re being immature or refusing to grow up.  It means staying connected to that part of yourself that still finds wonder in the little things.

To me, being a kid at heart is about curiosity.  The kind that makes you lay in the grass looking up at the clouds or pause to catch a sunset instead of rushing past it.  It’s about finding joy in the small moments, like laughing until your stomach hurts, or pigging out on candy and ice cream just because you can.

Adulthood tries to convince us to tone it down somewhere along the line.  You’re expected to be serious, composed, and well “put together.”  But when I think back to childhood, I remember how free it felt to just be.  To play without worrying what others thought.  To dream endlessly without limitations.  To feel everything so deeply—happiness, excitement, sadness—without shame.

These days, I’ve realized how important it is to reconnect with that part of myself.  Sometimes that means taking a walk and letting my imaginatioin run wild with possibilities, or coloring in a coloring book just for fun.  Other times, it’s letting myself cry when I need to, or laugh at something silly.  There’s something healing about remembering that the inner child within us never really disappears.  They just need you to hone into it and come out and play again.

When I spend time with kids, I’m reminded of pure their joy is.  I go to visit my godson at least twice a year, and he just recently turned seven.  Watching him grow has been one of the most joyful experiences of my life.  Seeing his curiosity, imagination, and humor develop is something that I deeply cherish.  I love playing space, jumping from planet to planet to defeat the monster on the “planet of crack lagoon” (as he calls it).  But his joy lights me up like nothing else can, and I instantly feel like a kid again.

Kids live so presently.  They’re not worried about what others think.  They’re just living their best lives.  It makes me realize just how much I miss the feeling sometimes.

To me, being a kid at heart is about holding onto that light.  The one that makes life feel magical, imaginative, and full of possibility.  It’s remembering how to find fun in ordinary things and how to approach life with open eyes.

So yes, I’m a grown adult with responsibilities, fears, and to-do lists, but I’m also still that kid who gets excited over dogs, loves Disney movies, and finds peace in coloring books.

To be a kid at heart means to stay tender in a world that often wants to harden you.  It means to keep believing in good things, even when life gets difficult.  And most of all, it means remembering that growing up doesn’t mean losing who you were.  It means carrying that spirit with you, everywhere you go.

“Growing up is mandatory, but growing old is optional.”

Walt Disney
