Why English Was My Favorite School Subject

Daily writing prompt
What was your favorite subject in school?

When I look back at my school days, I must admit that there were quite a few subjects that captured my curiosity—history, science, art—they all had an impact on me.  But if I had to choose one subject that truly shaped me, it would be English.

English class was where I felt most comfortable.  I still remember sitting at my desk, writing an in-class essay, one in which was published in the school’s newspaper.  It was freeing to let my thoughts spill onto the page and use my emotional perspective to really dig deep into the subject.  I was so proud of myself for writing a piece worthy of publication.

I loved writing — essays, research papers, creative assignments, you name it.  While most students groaned at the idea of a timed in-class essay, I secretly enjoyed the challenge.  I loved researching topics, crafting arguments, and weaving them together into something cohesive and meaningful.

I remember reading certain novels as well throughout high school.  Books like Catcher in the Rye or A Tale of Two Cities. Reading novels like those really opened my eyes to the power of language.

The stories I wrote weren’t just words on a page.  They were reflections of myself.  Some in which were too difficult to verbally communicate.  Personally, I loved analyzing characters, digging into themes, and drawing connections between literature and life.

It makes perfect sense why I became a journalist.  Writing has always been my way of processing the world.  English didn’t just teach me grammar or structure.  It taught me how to think, how to listen, and how to see.  It became a form of self-discovery.

Even now, as an adult, writing remains a safe space for me.  It’s where I can explore ideas, reflect on experiences, and express the parts of myself that don’t always fit neatly into conversation.

So, while I’ve always had a love for learning across different subjects, English will forever hold a special place in my heart.  It’s the foundation of who I am.

“A word after a word after a word is power.”
