Emotional Connection Through Family Recipes

Food has always been more than nourishment for me — it’s memory, identity, and connection all on a plate. From the aromas that fill a kitchen to the flavors that spark a memory, food tells a story about who we are and where we come from. The recipes I reach for when I’m sad, the meals that make me feel grounded, and the dishes that transport me back to home — they all carry pieces of my history, my family, and my heart.

One of my most vivid memories is going to my cousin’s house for Christmas dinner. The moment I walked in, I was hit with the smell of garlic — in our Italian family, we never hold back on it. The kitchen was alive with conversation, laughter, and the clinking of pots and pans. It was a bit chaotic, but in the best possible way. We made our traditional family meal: lasagna, sausage with peppers, meatballs, salad, and garlic bread. The table was full, and so were the plates.

But what made that night truly special was one of my cousin’s famous speeches — the ones he always gave before dinner. He spoke about the importance of family, of keeping our traditions alive, and passing them down to the next generation. His words made me feel so emotionally connected to what was right on my plate. Food that told a story. Food that was a representation of who I am and where I come from. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and belonging.

Our family expresses love through food. It’s how we comfort, how we celebrate, and how we connect. That’s something that’s stayed with me my whole life. The belief that food is about feeding your soul. And nothing says home to me quite like a bubbling pan of lasagna.

Lasagna

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ lb Italian sausage mild or spicy
  • 1 small yellow onion chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 can San Marzano crushed tomatoes
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups mozzarella shredded
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • salt and peper to taste
  • Lasagna noodles (regular or oven-ready)
  • Parmigiano Reggiano grated
  • fresh basil (optional for garnish)

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F 
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium heat until browned. Drain excess grease.
  3. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then stir in minced garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the San Marzano crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and parsley. Mix until smooth.
  6. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions (if not oven-ready). Drain and set aside.
  7. Once assembled, cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another 15–20 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
  8. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley and basil, if desired.
Assemble the lasagna
  1. Spread a thin layer of sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Add a layer of noodles.
  3. Spread the ricotta mixture, then sprinkle mozzarella and Parmigiano Reggiano.
  4. Repeat layers until ingredients are used up, finishing with sauce and a generous topping of mozzarella and Parmigiano.

Every family has a dish that tells their story — one that carries the weight of memory, love, and time. For mine, it’s lasagna. Each layer is a piece of our history: the sauce made with care, the laughter in the kitchen, the generations that came before us.
