Unconditional Love: The Impact of Pets on Our Lives

Daily writing prompt
What is good about having a pet?

First off, I want to start by saying that pets aren’t just “pets,” they’re family.  At least that’s how I feel about mine.  Having a furry family member is the best feeling in the world. They bring so much joy, happiness, and liveliness to the home.

Personally, I’ve only had dogs.  I’ve always been a dog mom, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  In my opinion, you can’t compare apples to oranges, so dogs have the upper hand over cats.  Sorry, not sorry.  Dogs just give off a love that is like no other feeling.  They provide you with warmth, loyalty, and certainly are a built-in best friend.

I’ve had three dogs throughout my life, each one at a different time.  My childhood dog, China, was a black labrador/shepherd mix.  She certainly was the queen of the house and by far the cutest little fluff ball I’ve had.  She was like me in a lot of ways—kept quiet mostly, retreated to corners for her space, and showered kisses when she felt like it.  I’m pretty much the same.  Always finding solace in silence.  She was a true beauty both inside and out, and I was lucky enough to have had her for sixteen wonderful years.  She is the epitome of my childhood.

Then comes Bosco, the German Shepherd mix.  As much as I love all of my dogs equally, Boss was without a doubt the love of my life.  We had such a special bond.  He’d follow me around everywhere I went, he constantly showed his love through kisses, belly rubs, and cuddling.  He was perhaps the friendliest of each of my dogs.  I just loved him so fiercely.  He helped me get through some of the toughest moments of my life, and to him, I will be forever grateful.

My current pup, Kai, is the funniest dog I’ve ever had.  He’s a bit of a nut; he’ll sniff out his food before eating or turn his nose away to it.  What dog turns his nose to a piece of string cheese? He’s a German Shepherd Husky mix.  He’s another one that likes to be by my side always.  He’s just a little bit more of a handful because he isn’t the friendliest to others and has a lot of anxiety like his mom.  Taking him into the vet? Forget about it.  It’s such a big production.  He once had to get his shots out in the parking lot because no one could wrangle him inside.  He’s like the sour patch gummy, first sour, then sweet.  I couldn’t love him more.

So, what’s so great about pets? They’re your companion through life.  They love you unconditionally, they’re a rock to lean on when you need comfort, and they can certainly bring a smile to your face when you’re feeling down.  I love to see the tail-wags and puppy dog eyes light up when I get home.  Each of my dogs have taught me something important.  China inspired me to be more resilient.  Bosco taught me how to love and accept love.  Kai has shown me that even with all of my mental health issues, I can still be authentically myself.  For them, I’m forever grateful to have been blessed with such wonderful family members.
