Celebrating Thanksgiving: Food, Family, and Gratitude
Thanksgiving has always been more than a holiday for me. It’s a gathering of flavors, memories, and moments that remind you what you’re grateful for. For me, so much of that feeling is built in the kitchen.
Food is the heart of Thanksgiving. It’s the way we love, the way we remember, the way we honor the hands that came before us. I know that whenever I’m in the kitchen, I feel my ancestors guide me and show me the traditional ways of cooking. In my family, it’s important to keep traditions alive and pass down recipes from generation to generation. We often gather together before thanksgiving to honor all of our loved ones who’ve passed.
I’m proud to cook for thanksgiving. Sure, it’s an all-day thing, but it’s an intentional experience. Each year, I learn something new—new techniques, new flavors, and sometimes new dishes. I can’t express enough the aroma that fills the kitchen. The turkey roasting in the oven with all of its seasonings and herbs is comfort to my senses.

My grandma’s Italian bread dressing is the most notable dish at the table. It’s the only recipe I’ll ever use, and it’s the most delicious accompaniment to the turkey and fixings. It reminds me of the feeling of home.

Growing up, Thanksgiving was one of the few times everyone gathered in the same space. The kitchen would fill with chatter, laughter, and shared stories. I used to go to my cousin’s house every year when a lot of the elders were still around. They of course were the chefs, and the best ones at that. The way that they cooked with intention, with heart, and with gratitude, inspired me to do the same.
Now, when I step into my own kitchen to prepare my Thanksgiving meal, I carry those memories with me. And no dish captures that spirit for me quite like a beautifully roasted turkey — the true centerpiece of the holiday table. And of course, my family’s staple, Barbara’s infamous Italian dressing.
Remember, Thanksgiving isn’t just about the food. It’s about what food represents: family, harvest, connection, and comfort.
Here’s to a holiday filled with warmth, gratitude, and a table full of love.
Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours!
