A Heartwarming Encounter: The Power of Kindness
I recently had an encounter with someone outside of a 7/11. I assumed he was homeless and would ask me for money, but much to my surprise, he didn’t. He had simply asked for a hot dog.
I usually get nervous around people when I’m out in public. And for this reason, I walked past him without a single word spoken. I felt so horrible for ignoring his presence and not responding to his question.
I bought him that hot dog. Then, I went outside to tell him to put all the fixings he wanted on it. He seemed rather shocked that I came back. But I noticed his smile. He whispered a graceful thank you in my direction and proceeded to get his food.
This encounter made me realize that I shouldn’t be fearful of people who just genuinely want a little extra help. Not everyone who’s homeless is dangerous. I was able to nourish someone who had gone without food for an unknown duration. It made my heart feel so full.
Financially speaking, I struggle quite a bit. I’m so thankful that I had a little extra money that day to help someone. I’m not trying to share this story for praise or a pat on the back. I want to show how small acts of kindness can mean so much.
This gentleman was so nice and genuinely grateful for what I did. I now try to be less oblivious and more open to people. There’s nothing quite like putting a smile on someone’s face, and put food in their belly.
The fact of the matter is that we never know the battles someone is facing, I’ve lived this personally myself. I’m not trying to compare stories. I’m just reminding us that we all carry hidden burdens. We should be more amiable and less ignorant.
It’s important not to judge a book by its cover, because everyone’s story is deep and complex. We should look at people as people instead of someone less worthy or less than. Kindness and generosity go a long way. Let’s always keep that in mind.
“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.”
