What It Really Takes to Live a Good Life
I used to think the answer to this question was something big. Something grandiose, and far off in the distance. Having a good life isn’t about your successes, accomplishments, or productivity. It’s about feeling loved, safe, seen, and alive. However, that may look for you personally, because not everyone’s idea of excellence or perfection is the same.
Love Given and Received
At the heart of a good life is love. Not just romantic live, but deep, soul-filling connection. The kind where you feel safe enough to be vulnerable. To be real and held without judgment.
To love and to be loved is everything. Whether it’s a big bear hug, like my grandpa always gave, or a silent understanding over a meal, love is truly the anchor.
Good Food, Good Company
There is nothing like sharing a meal with loved ones. The warmth of laughter over a kitchen table. The joy of biting into something delicious. The familiar flavors that bring comfort, and the new ones that bring intrigue and delight.
It doesn’t always need to be aesthetically pleasing. It could even be sharing a bowl of nachos. But food that fills your belly, and company that fills your soul—that’s the recipe.
Laughter, Often and Loud
Laughter has healed me in moments when nothing else could. It helps relieve the tension of stress, grief, and uncertainty. It reminds me that joy can exist even when you’re at your lowest moments. Laughing is like exhaling all the heaviness and finally breathing in some hope.
Mental Peace Starts with You
A good life includes taking care of your mental health first, not last. Not after everything else is done. Taking care of your mind, your heart, your nervous system isn’t selfish. It’s vital. Whether it’s therapy, rest, journaling, or simply saying now when you need to. Because you matter above everything else. It’s taken me a very long time to understand this notion, but it is factual. You need to prioritize yourself otherwise you’re jeopardizing your happiness and mental wellbeing.
Comfort and Contentment
There is power in simply being comfortable. Wrapped in a blanket sipping tea. Sitting with people you trust. Being in your skin without apology. Contentment doesn’t mean giving up, it means choosing peace over pressure.
Living on Your Own Terms
A good life doesn’t have a blueprint. It’s not about fitting in. It’s about belonging to yourself. It means listening to your body. Honoring your energy. Creating space for what feels right. It’s not always flashy or loud. Sometimes it’s quiet and steady. And that’s more than enough.
“A good life is a collection of happy moments, quiet comforts, and deep connections.”
