The Books Calling to Me: A Reader’s Dilemma

Lately, my attention span has been that of a fish.  I haven’t been doing some of the things I take pleasure in.  Reading for example.  I haven’t been doing it lately.  It’s not because I don’t want to, it’s because my mind has been pulled in so many directions.  Between caregiving, blogging, and navigating waves of depression, finding the mental space to sit down and get lost in a book has been challenging.

There’s something magical about reading.  It invites you into another world and offers you new ways of seeing.  It gives your own thoughts a moment to rest, and that’s something that I desperately need.

But the books I bought recently are sitting quietly on my shelf gathering dust. They’re ready and waiting for me to crack them open. The thing is, I want to immerse myself in a book, but I just can’t seem to get there.

So here are the books that are waiting for me, and why I hope to meet them soon:

The Crescent City Series by Sarah J. Maas

Box set of the 'Crescent City' series by Sarah J. Maas featuring colorful covers for three books: 'House of Earth and Blood', 'House of Sky and Breath', and 'House of Flame and Shadow'.

I’ve read A Court of Thorns and Roses and Throne of Glass—and I fell completely in love with both.  Sarah J. Maas has a way of building worlds and characters that stay with you long after the last page.  Crescent City is the next logical step, but I’ve been hesitant.  Maybe it’s the mixed reviews.  Maybe I’m just afraid it won’t live up to the others.  Or maybe I’m waiting until I can give it my full attention—because I want to go in open-hearted.  Either way, it’s there… calling to me.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

This one has been everywhere.  I’m all about dragons, trials, and romance.  All the fantasy elements I love wrapped up in a story that feels both epic and intimate.  It’s exactly the kind of book I would normally devour in a weekend.  This one excites me.  It’s a new fantasy book to get lost into.  I genuinely miss the feeling of staying up late with a book I can’t put down.  I think this one is that kind of read.

Unmasking Autism by Devon Price

This one’s different.  It’s not an escape.  It’s more of a mirror.  I bought this book because I want to learn more about myself and others like me.  I want to hear from someone who gets it.  Reading it feels like an emotional investment, which is why I think I’ve been putting it off.   But I know there’s healing in those pages.  I’m looking forward to reading it when I feel steady enough to take it all in.

Until We Meet

These are the books that are just waiting for me.  And I’m reminding myself that just because I haven’t read them yet doesn’t mean I never will.  I know that clarity will come, and the focus will return.  And when it does, these stories will be a pleasant escape.  Especially when I need it most.

“Some books wait for the right version of you to pick them up.”
