Outgrowing Hobbies: Embracing Change and Growth
Looking back, itโs surprising to see how many hobbies I’ve outgrown. It feels like viewing a distant yet familiar past self. Accepting this has been tough, especially with depression influencing my journey.
There was a time when I had so much passion and drive for the things I loved. Cooking, for example, was one of my greatest joys. I found comfort in experimenting with flavors, creating meals from scratch, and sharing them with others. Now, I look for the fastest way out when it comes to food. This behavior feels so unlike me. The passion has faded, and in its place is a lingering sense of loss.
Sports were another big part of my life. I played soccer for 14 years and even spent a few years on the softball field. I loved the game, the adrenaline, and the discipline that came with it. But there was always one part I struggled with, the social aspect. Forced interactions drained me. Iโve always felt awkward and aloof when it comes to forming relationships. I overthink every interaction, convincing myself that people secretly dislike me. Itโs an exhausting way to exist, especially as someone who is highly sensitive to the emotions and perceptions of others.
Losing interest in things that once defined us can feel like losing pieces of ourselves. But maybe itโs not just about lossโitโs about change. As people, we evolve. Our interests shift, and what once sparked joy may no longer serve us in the same way. And thatโs okay.
I still hold onto the hope that one day, the passion will return. Maybe Iโll find my way back to the kitchen, excited to create something delicious again. Maybe Iโll rediscover a sport that allows me to enjoy the movement without the pressure of forced socialization.
For now, I remind myself that change is a part of life. It is a constant force that shapes our journeys in unpredictable ways. Even without passion, there is still room for growth. We can discover ourselves more, as each experience teaches us something new about ourselves and the world around us. Embracing this fluidity allows us to adapt and forge new paths, uncovering hidden strengths and insights along the way. As I navigate through these transitions, I find solace. I understand that every step ahead contributes to my personal evolution, no matter how small.
“Today is life-the only life you are sure of. Make the most of today. Get interested in something. Shake yourself awake. Develop a hobby. Let the winds of enthusiasm sweep through you. Live today with gusto.”
