What’s in a Middle Name? A Funny Coincidence

Daily writing prompt
What is your middle name? Does it carry any special meaning/significance?

Middle names can carry deep significant meanings. Some are passed down from generations, honoring loved ones, or symbolizing something special and unique. Mine? Well, it’s just a product of the late ’80s and early ’90s name trends.

My first name, Nicole, was so popular, I recall being in classrooms filled with 3 or more Nicole’s. It was frustrating to hear the teacher call on a Nicole. We never knew who had to answer a question or stop disrupting the class. Though it was a name my parents loved, it is also a nod to my dad’s childhood golden retriever.

The dog’s name was Nikki. I actually love that I’m named after a furry friend. Dogs are a huge part of my life and soul. I hate to admit it, but I care much more deeply for animals than any other group. No offense to my fellow people, but let’s be honest, there is no competition in my book.

So let me introduce my full name to you. I’m Nicole Ashley Greco, or as my initials spell out—NAG. Did my parents realize this when they named me? Probably not. But I find it hilarious and oddly fitting.

Growing up, I never really thought much about my middle name. We rarely use it to begin with. Mine wasn’t an old family name or something with a profound story behind it. It was just Ashley—a name that seemed to be everywhere when I was a kid.

If you were born in the late ’80s, there were probably at least one or more Ashleys in your class. The same goes if you were born in the early ’90s. Ashley was common then. It was just one of those names, like Jennifer, Jessica, or Brittany.

But then there’s the acronym—NAG. And let’s be honest. With my personality and my knack for complaining really sets the tone for the name. It almost feels that I was destined to wear the name. I’m not saying I constantly nag people. I do have strong opinions, especially when it comes to things I care about.

Whether it is advocating for mental health, or just reminding my loved ones about important things. “Mom don’t forget your inhaler!” Or being a backseat driver, telling friends to slow down, or use their signal. I guess I just speak my mind in times of impatience and uncertainty. My inner nag keeps me safe and aware, so I embrace it.

At the end of the day, my middle name might not have a deep, historical meaning. However, it has become something uniquely me. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the little things—like an unintentional acronym—can carry unexpected significance. Either way, every name has a story—even if it’s just a funny coincidence.
