The Importance of Voting in a Democracy

Do you vote in political elections?

Yes, I do vote in political elections. I believe that it’s incredibly important to use your voice and participate in the democratic process. It’s a right that I think every American should use, regardless of who’s in the race. As a woman, I especially don’t take that right for granted. I’m holding on to hope that this right won’t be taken away, given the current administration.

I’ve often felt disheartened by how the electoral system functions. In how the popular vote can be overshadowed by the electoral college. Living in California, a consistently blue state, I know my vote aligns with the majority here, but it can still feel like a drop in the ocean.

I generally avoid getting into deep heated political debates because both sides tend to be firmly entrenched in their beliefs. It’s rare to change someone else’s mind, and those conversations are pointless because they lead nowhere. That said, the last election felt too critical to ignore. I knew people who threw away their vote because they didn’t like either candidate. It’s upsetting to see your peers not take an election seriously. What we’re facing now feels like a national crisis—an American nightmare.

We have a convicted criminal and an incoherent, and inarticulate individual leading the country. My frustration goes beyond the administration itself; it extends to the voters who enabled this outcome. I was naive to assume that most Americans shared a baseline of good judgment. Sadly, I’ve realized that misinformation, fear, and blind loyalty have clouded critical thinking for many.

Only a short time into this new leadership, and we’re already seeing serious threats to our democracy. We’re being led by someone who lacks even a basic understanding of American history—someone who appears indifferent to truth, learning, or compassion.

I could say much more about the dangerous path this country is on. It’s heartbreaking to see so many follow a figure who thrives on division, hate, and lies. The consequences of this leadership will take years to repair—if repair is even possible. America, we are in deep trouble.
