Why I Spend My Days With My Dog
Who Do You Spend the Most Time With?
By Nicole Greco
If I’m being completely honest, the one I spend the most time with isn’t a person at all.
It’s my dog, Kai.
My shadow.
My safe place.
My saving grace.
I know to some, that might sound a little ridiculous. But if you’ve ever had a dog who just knows—knows when your chest is tight, when the world feels too loud, or when you need a reason to get out of bed—then you understand.
My German Shepherd, Kai “bug” as I like to call him, is more than just a pet. He is family. He’s my emotional support when I’m having a hard day. My silent therapist with a wagging tail. My soft reminder that I’m not alone—even on days where it feels like I am.
There’s a kind of love only animals can provide. It’s unconditional and steady. Wordless, but somehow always understood. Kai has been with me through a lot of ups and downs. Always curled beside me when I couldn’t stop crying. Nudge me to play ball with him when I stayed in bed too long. Greeted me like I was gone for days. He makes me feel like the most important person in the world—no matter how broken I felt inside.
Time doesn’t always need to be filled with conversation or productivity. Sometimes, the most healing kind of time is spent with someone who simply stays.
So yes, I spend the majority of my time with my dog. And truthfully? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Sometimes the best therapist has fur and four legs.”
