Embracing Your Inner Witch This Halloween

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays.  There’s something so magical and mysterious about it.  I love the cool crisp fall air, the glow of the pumpkins, the adorned twinkle lights, and of course, the costumes.  But beyond that, Halloween has always felt symbolic to me.  It’d a reminder of the power we carry inside, and how easily we forget it.

Last year, I dressed up as a witch.  Not the stereotypical kind with a pointed hat and broom, but a warrior witch—one of the characters from one of my fantasy novels.  She was fierce, fearless, and unshakably strong.  She didn’t take any crap from anyone, stood her ground, and fought for herself and for others with unwavering conviction.  She was everything I admired in a woman—confident, powerful, and unapologetically herself.

Wearing that costume, I realized something profound.  I wasn’t just pretending to be her.  I was channeling a part of myself that I’d forgotten existed.  The part that knows how to stand tall in her truth.  The part that refuses to shrink just to make others comfortable. The part that believes in her own magic, even when the world tells her not to.

The word witch has long been misunderstood.  It originally meant “wise woman”—someone deeply connected to the natural world and her intuition.  She was a healer, a protector, a woman who trusted her inner knowing.  But over time, society began to fear women like that—those who couldn’t be controlled, who refused to stay silent, who lived by their own rhythm. And so, they tried to erase her.

But she still lives in all of us.  Especially in women, empaths, and neurodivergent souls who’ve been told their sensitivity is weakness or their intuition is “too much.”  We’ve learned to hide our knowing, to second-guess ourselves, to downplay our power so we don’t make waves.

Reclaiming that inner witch isn’t about spells or potions.  It’s about trusting that voice inside of you that says, “This isn’t right for me.”  It’s about speaking your truth and letting yourself take up space without apology. Being a witch, means being in tune with yourself and the world around you.  It means embracing those parts of yourself that are unique.

When I put on that warrior witch costume last year, I didn’t just see a character from a story.  I saw the woman I’ve been becoming—strong, intuitive, brave, and deeply connected to her truth.

This Halloween, I’m not dressing up as her. I’m becoming her.  Because the witch within me was never imaginary.  She was just waiting to be remembered.

“The witch is the woman who remembers her power, trusts her intuition, and refuses to apologize for either.”
