Embracing Your Authentic Self After Diagnosis

I often feel like there are many things I would change about myself. However, I’ve had such a better sense of myself after learning more about my mental health diagnosis. It feels as though a significant transformation has taken place within me. I now experience a newfound sense of freedom, as if a tremendous weight has been lifted off my shoulders. For so long, I’ve been carrying around so much baggage. This includes self-doubt, low self-esteem, low self-worth, negative thoughts, and insecurity. I now understand it as Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). The list of challenges I faced is extensive, and it often felt overwhelming.
Throughout my life, I always sensed that I was different from my peers. I tried my best to blend in, primarily out of fear of teasing and bullying. Somehow, I navigated through those formative years with relatively little trouble. I now realize that I was masking my true self the entire time. This masking is often linked to Autism and ADHD. These are two diagnoses that have recently come to light for me. My journey began in childhood and continued, often tumultuously, into adulthood.
Just recently, I received a diagnosis encompassing several “disorders.” This revelation has provided me with the clarity I had been desperately seeking. For many years, I believed I was broken. I thought I was inherently flawed because of how I processed the world. However, my perspective has shifted dramatically; I now understand that I am not broken at all. Instead, I am unique, and what makes me my authentic self is genuinely beautiful.
Having gone through this enlightening process, I wouldn’t change anything. Listening to those old insecurities, I would tell my younger self that it will be okay. You are not alone in this world, even though you might think you are. There is a vast community out there filled with individuals ready to offer support, insights, and shared experiences. You belong! The world around you might not be designed for a brain like yours. Take heart. You will learn to embrace who you are.
In the future, you will one day discover the nuances that make you, you. You will find your authentic self and carve a positive path forward, one that is rich in understanding and acceptance. It’s a journey filled with growth and learning, but it’s a path worth walking. Embrace this journey, because there is so much to look forward to, and your existence has value beyond measure.
