Coping with Pandemic-Induced Isolation

Daily writing prompt
How have you adapted to the changes brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic?

The pandemic caused a lot of stress and anxiety for me. I’ve always been a homebody, but being forced to stay indoors took a major toll on my mental health. I could only talk to friends via social media, texts, and phone calls. I hated the feeling of isolation and the natural fright it instilled in a lot of people. I still feel like I’m dealing with the repercussions from it.

I never in my lifetime thought I would experience so many different catastrophic events. I’m a millennial, and thus far I’ve seen the World Trade Center collapse due to international terrorism. I’ve been caught up in the recession of 2008. I’ve witnessed a pandemic that caused so much turmoil and fear. And now, I’m watching this country deteriorate under leadership that dismissed the seriousness of the illness. All of this happened before I even turn 40.

For me, I’ll just say that the pandemic made me feel utterly depressed. I was scared and anxious. There was an overall uneasiness in the world outside. I felt like I couldn’t socialize properly anymore. I felt like I couldn’t go into an office and work with people again, preferring a remote position. Even though things have improved, I still feel trapped by the emotional roller-coaster I went through.

The pandemic took a lot out of me, and I’m still recovering. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. The chaos, the fear, and the isolation left lasting scars on many people’s mental health. Kids were forced into online learning, friendships suffered, and social interactions became strained. It wasn’t just the virus itself—it was the world’s reaction to it. If more people had taken it seriously, perhaps we wouldn’t have had to endure such prolonged isolation.

Were you affected by the pandemic? How did it take a toll on your mental health? It’s still something that aches me to this day. I’m curious if others feel the same way.
