Nourish to Flourish: Comfort Food as Self-Care

Food is more than just fuel for the body, it’s a comfort.  It’s a language of love because it’s made from the heart.  Any great chef will tell you that. It’s a sensory experience that lets you truly taste, smell, and feel the joy woven into every moment. Above all else, it’s a form of self-care.

Sometimes the act of choosing what to eat can feel overwhelming and lead to decision fatigue.  It’s difficult for a lot of neurodivergent people to decide because of added pressure to appease everyone.  They generally want to stick to their familiar foods whether it’s cooking or going out to eat.

There is something great about returning to familiar food. The cozy, and hearty meals that leave your stomach full, and you’re mind at peace. It’s a deeply personal experience indulging in comfort food. It helps you to reconnect with yourself, and reflect on the good, simple things in life.

For neurodivergent people especially, comfort food can create routine, predictability, and sensory calm. A hot bowl of chicken noodle soup can create an emotional balance. The ritual of cooking after a hard day can do the same.

Why It’s Healing:

Chicken noodle soup is gentle on the stomach and rich and helps support a healthy immune system. Beyond the physical benefits, it’s the pleasure of making it. Chopping the vegetables, stirring the pot, small acts that offer you a sense of calm and clarity.

 Reflect & Restore:

Making comforting delicious meals doesn’t need to be difficult.  You don’t need fancy ingredients or be a culinary expert. Some days when you’re feeling down, cooking is more about survival.  Other days it’s a ritual.  A place where you can be yourself, focus, and let go of all the negative thoughts. It’s a great form of self-care.

So whether you’re microwaving an oatmeal or baking chocolate chip cookies late at night, know that you are taking care of yourself. You are tending to your heart.

What meal makes you fell like yourself?
