Tiramisu: A Delicious Journey Back Home
There’s something about tiramisu that instantly feels like home to me. It’s not just the layers of espresso-soaked ladyfingers, the delicate mascarpone cream, or the dusting of cocoa on top. It’s the memories it carries with it.
When I was young, my family and I had this tradition of going to an Italian restaurant every year to celebrate our birthdays. The atmosphere felt like stepping onto the cobblestone streets of Italy. The dining room was dimly lit, with red candles glowing on every table and the classic red-and-white checkered tablecloths. The walls were painted with little windows and doors, so you felt like you were sitting in a cozy Italian village.
What made it even more magical was the live entertainment. The wait staff doubled as singers, so between serving plates of pasta and pouring glasses of wine, they would serenade each table. It was dinner and a show rolled into one, and it made every birthday feel unforgettable.
And every single year, without fail, when dessert came, I’d order tiramisu. One bite of that creamy, coffee-soaked goodness and it was pure joy. Over the years, it became more than just a sweet treat—it became tradition. To me, tiramisu is family, celebration, and the comfort of belonging. Even now, whenever I taste it, I’m transported back to those nights. I can almost smell the coffee brewing, hear the music filling the room, and feel the joy of being surrounded by the people I love most.
Tiramisu also ties me to one of my favorite cultures in the world: Italy. I was lucky enough to visit once, and it was the most incredible experience of my life. One of the highlights was sitting in a little bakery café in Rome called Antico Caffè Greco—fitting, since my own last name is Greco. Established in the 1700s, it’s a true Roman staple, buzzing with history and charm. I remember ordering a cappuccino and a slice of tiramisu, and in that moment, amidst the hustle and bustle of Rome, I felt a deep sense of peace. It was simple yet profound. The same flavors I loved as a child, now connecting me to the culture that created them.
For me, tiramisu isn’t just dessert. It’s a bridge—between childhood and adulthood, between family and culture, between home and the places I long to return to. It’s comfort, nostalgia, and joy, all in one bite.
Tiramisu
Ingredients
Method
- Add whipping cream to a mixing bowl and beat on medium speed with electric mixers (or use a stand mixer). Slowly add sugar and vanilla and continue to beat until stiff peaks. Add mascarpone cheese and fold in until combined. Set aside.
- Add coffee and liqueur to a shallow bowl. Dip the lady fingers in the coffee (Don't soak them–just quickly dip them on both sides to get them wet) and lay them in a single layer on the bottom of an 8×8'' or similar size pan.
- Smooth half of the mascarpone mixture over the top. Add another layer of dipped lady fingers. Smooth remaining mascarpone cream over the top.
- Dust cocoa powder generously over the top (I use a fine mesh strainer to do this). Refrigerate for at least 3-4 hours or up to overnight before serving.
Notes
“A bite of tiramisu is like a sweet hug from Italy.”
