What I Love About October: Baseball, Halloween & the Little Things
October has always felt a little special to me.
Maybe it’s because so many of the things I genuinely enjoy seem to show up all at once. Baseball playoffs. Halloween. Crisp mornings. Comfortable clothes. Pumpkin spice. Fall vegetables. Cooking. Staying home and settling into the evening.
But I think there’s something deeper about it for me, too.
October feels like permission to slow down.
I don’t necessarily mean that life gets slower. It really doesn’t. There are still things to do, places to be, and plenty of everyday chaos. But something about this month makes me want to pay more attention to the little things instead of constantly rushing toward the next thing.
And, of course, there’s baseball.
I’m a Dodgers fan, so October is a big deal around here. The playoffs are easily my favorite part of the season, and I’m looking for that three-peat. love settling in to watch a game and knowing that every pitch, every at-bat, every little moment could matter. It’s one of those things that gives me something to look forward to.
Then there’s Halloween, which I still love. Maybe it’s the nostalgia of it, maybe it’s the excuse to watch something spooky and eat too much popcorn and candy, or maybe I just like that October lets us have a little extra fun.
I love the change in weather, too.
There’s nothing like putting on a comfortable sweatshirt, making coffee, and feeling that little bit of crispness in the air. Living in Los Angeles means fall doesn’t always look like your typical fall scene, but I’ll take what I can get.
And I love the food that comes with this time of year.
Pumpkin spice, obviously. But also squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, and all those fall vegetables that make me want to spend a little more time in the kitchen. I love when cooking feels less like something I have to do and more like something I actually want to do.
I think that’s what I love about October.
It’s not really about the leaves changing or having the perfect fall weather. It’s about the small comforts that make me feel good.
It’s baseball I care way too much about. It’s Halloween. It’s coffee on a cool morning. It’s clothes that are actually comfortable. It’s pumpkin spice. It’s cooking something warm. It’s being home.
After everything life has a way of throwing at us, I think those little things are worth noticing.
I don’t need October to be extraordinary.
I just want to enjoy it.
So, hello October.
I’m happy you’re here.
Now let’s get that three-peat, Dodgers.

What are a few little things that make this time of year feel special to you?

I look forward to the colours of the leaves and later the crunch when they fall.
Those days where it might be cool. But not cold that you need a coat. Just a sweater being enough, or short sleeved top under an open coat.
I have been having a couple of days this week where it has been surprisingly warm enough to still walk outside in a short sleeved top
Spicy pumpkin is nice too. But I don’t have it often.
