When You Just Want Something to Change

Most of the time, I talk a lot about the fear of change, but lately, I want that. I just get so sick and tired of the same routines, the same worries, and feeling like I’m stuck in the same place I’ve been for far too long.

It’s hard to explain. It’s more of a feeling that builds up over time. I’ll start looking at different parts of my life and wonder why I am where I am today, whether things are going to get better, and what it would look like to feel a little more content with where I’m at.

Sometimes, I really just want a fresh start. A chance to do things differently, get out of the same patterns, and feel like I’m moving forward instead of going through the motions.

The frustrating part is that I don’t always know what I want to change. I just know that I don’t particularly like how things feel right now.

I think there’s a difference between being unhappy with one part of your life and feeling like several parts of your life aren’t where you want them to be. When it’s one thing, you can usually focus on it and figure out what needs to happen. But when it’s everything, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

Lately, I’ve been feeling unsettled with my job, my relationships, and the direction my life is going. I look around at everyone else moving forward, being happy, and getting the things they want out of life, while I feel like I’m still in the same place. It’s hard not to compare yourself when you see other people moving into new chapters. I’m genuinely happy for them, but also wishing things were different in my life.

I think we can want good things for other people and still feel disappointed with where we are. Those feelings don’t cancel each other out.

And the more I see other people moving forward, the more I feel like I need something to change immediately. It’s almost like I need an instant solution to whatever problems I’m dealing with. I want things to fall into place, to have some answers, and to feel like I’m finally getting somewhere. Then I get even more frustrated when that doesn’t happen. I know they say patience is a virtue, but how long am I supposed to wait? It’s hard to be patient when you’re already tired of feeling the way you do.

Another frustrating part about wanting change is not knowing where to start. It’s like you might have an idea of what your life might look like, but actually making those changes feels completely overwhelming. There are circumstances that aren’t always within your control.

I want a fresh start, but sometimes I don’t have the energy to figure out what that would involve. I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself to know exactly what I want, where I’m going, and how I’m going to get there. But I can recognize that something isn’t working without immediately trying to fix it.

I also want to mention that it’s important to remember that wanting something different doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful for what you already have. I appreciate the good things in my life, but I can still want more for myself. I know what I have, but I also acknowledge that I’m not entirely happy with how things are going.

Sometimes, I think we just reach a point where we’re tired of feeling stuck. We want something to look forward to, something to work toward, or a reason to feel excited about what’s ahead.

I think it’s enough to admit that we can want something to change and give ourselves the time to figure out what that might look like.

Because wanting a different life just might mean you’re ready for something new.

What is one thing you wish would change in your life right now?

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow.” — Lao Tzu
