How Air Conditioning Supports Summer Self-Care
One luxury I couldn’t live without would be air-conditioning. It’s what’s saving my life right ow from the blistering heat. It might sound silly to some, but honestly, it’s something I’ve become deeply reliant on.
The heat and I don’t mix well. I overheat easily—not just from the sun, but from overwhelm. I sweat more when I’m overstimulated, and in the summer, that overstimulation hits harder. There’s too much heat outside, and too much building up inside me.
I love summer—in theory. I romanticize eating ice cream at the beach, the smell of sunscreen, and salty ocean breezes. But in reality, summer can be a lot when you’re neurodivergent.
The heat feels like a weighted blanket I didn’t ask for. The brightness can be blinding, and when I’m too hot, my patience disappears. My thoughts spiral. I get dizzy and nauseous. Suddenly, everything feels harder.
So yes, air conditioning is a luxury I deeply depend on. It gives me the space to breathe. It helps my body regulate when my brain can’t. It’s not glamorous, but for me, it’s a form of self-care.
One of my got to rituals is sitting inside, soaking in the cool air with a nice glass of cold water in hand. It’s simple and exactly what my nervous system needs.
“You don’t have to push through everything. You’re allowed to protect your peace, even if it means hugging the AC all summer.”
