Inspiring Quotes to Live By: E.E. Cummings’ Wisdom

Daily writing prompt
Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often?

“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else — means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.” — E.E. Cummings

I’ve always had a deep admiration for inspiring and uplifting quotes.  For me, I’ve found a special kind of love for the words of poet and painter E.E. Cummings.  There’s something so real and raw in the way he writes.

It’s so powerful how he speaks the truth, and you can visibly see the emotion behind each word.  It’s beauty, its pain, it’s brilliant.  His work often makes me feel seen, heard, and understood in a way that few things do.

This quote, in particular, is one of my favorites.  I resonate with it on a soul-deep level.  My whole life has felt like an ongoing war—a battle with myself.  I am both the protagonist and the antagonist in my own story.  It’s confusing.

In my mind, I’m always looking to be the hero.  I’m slaying monsters trying to consume my spirit, but sometimes, I become one of them.  I sabotage my own peace and essentially become my own worst enemy. It feels like I’m lost in a maze without any sense of direction.  I always have to second-guess every turn, every move I make.

Truth is, I’ve felt invisible for most of my life.  I’ve been overlooked, ignored, as if I wasn’t worthy of being seen.  I hid in my shell, barricading myself from the world out of fear of judgment and rejection. I avoided my problems, thinking that silence was the safer option, but eventually, something just had to change.

I realized I couldn’t keep living in my safe zone, thinking that silence was safer.  I knew I needed to make some transitions in order to get my mind and body moving again. Slowly slipping out of that hard shell.  I had to rise. I had to fight—not just for myself, but for others like me.  For all of those who are still hiding, still afraid to be noticed.

This quote reminds me why I keep going.  Even though I wasn’t made in the image this world expects, I still deserve to take up space.  I deserve to be heard and live fully, authentically myself, just like everyone else.

For me, it’s a call to action for anyone who’s ever felt like the “outsider.” Keep fighting.  Keep being different.  Keep shining you light—because that how the world changes.  One voice might not seem like enough, but if we stand together our voices will indeed be heard.
