5 Comfort Foods That Get Me Through Burnout
Burnout can sometimes creep in quietly. At first, it can look like forgetfulness, fatigue, and anxiety. Then the apathy comes in. The numbness. The days when even making a sandwich can feel overwhelming.
In moments like those, food can become more than nourishment. It can become a form of survival, and sometimes, the only thing that can feel comforting or familiar.
Here are 5 comfort foods that help get me through burnout. Some are homemade, some are frozen, but all of them are soft, simple and soul soothing.
1. Creamy Mac & Cheese (Boxed or Baked—No Judgment)
When life feels flavorless, mac and cheese reminds me I can still feel that warmth. The nostalgic taste, the creamy texture, and the ease of stirring it all together, generates calmness and stability. Whether it’s from a box or baked fresh in the oven with breadcrumbs, this dish holds me and tells me everything will be okay.
My go-to hack: Add frozen broccoli or shredded rotisserie chicken for a protein boost.
2. Avocado Toast with Balsamic Drizzle & Sea Salt
A healthy, comfort classic. When I have zero executive function left, this is what I fall back on. The crunch of the sourdough toast, the creamy richness from the avocado, the sweetness of the balsamic drizzle, and a pinch of sea salt, is like a warm embrace.
Bonus tip: Use sourdough for extra texture and flavor.
3. Rotisserie Chicken & Instant Mashed Potatoes
I have zero shame about this one here. I often grab rotisserie chicken from the grocery store and pair it with instant buttery mashed potatoes. It reminds me of Sunday dinners without the effort. This is a comforting meal that provides you with a sense of wholeness and vitality.
Feel-good shortcut: Microwave-steam a bag of frozen green beans to add something green to the plate.
4. Spaghetti and Meatballs
This feels a little fancier, but in reality, its simple and quick to make. I would say that this is the ultimate comfort food for me. There’s something about the homemade marinara sauce that fills every room with its presence. The smell and sound of sizzling meatballs. The perfectly salted pasta to accompany the dish. It’s pure magic for my soul.
5. Greek Yogurt with Berries & Granola (or Just Ice Cream, Let’s Be Real)
Some days, Greek yogurt and berries feels nourishing. Other days, it’s strawberry ice cream at midnight. Both are valid, and comforting. The yogurt acts as a wonderful substitute to dessert. I often choose to eat it later in the evening instead of in the morning.

Ingredients
Method
- Cook pasta in salted water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and whisk continuously for about 1–2 minutes (until it smells slightly nutty). This is your base!
- Gradually whisk in the milk to avoid lumps. Let it simmer until it thickens (about 4–5 minutes). Stir often!
- Turn the heat to low and add the shredded cheese. Stir until it’s completely melted and silky. Season with salt, pepper, and any optional spices.
- Add your cooked pasta to the cheese sauce. Mix until every piece is coated and gooey. Taste and adjust seasoning.
- Optional step: Pour into an oven-safe dish, top with breadcrumbs or extra cheese, and broil for 2–3 minutes for a crispy topping.
