Simple Self-Care Practices for Everyday Peace

Daily writing prompt
How do you practice self-care?

Self-care isnโ€™t all about luxury spa days or expensive wellness routines.  For me, itโ€™s much quieter than that.  Itโ€™s simplicity at its best.  I do small, and sometimes deeply personal routines to achieve a state of clarity and calm.

A lot of my self-care lives in the basics.  Such as brushing my teeth, taking a long shower, getting dressed everyday even when I donโ€™t feel like it.  These small acts help ground me and bring me back to myself.

On days when I do have more space to breathe, I take my time.  I light candles, put on some music that matches my mood, and let myself drift into escapism.  Sometimes I color, streamline my thoughts in my journal, get lost in a good book, or watch TV, especially baseball.  Thereโ€™s something soothing about the rhythm of peace I create for myself.

Cooking is another form of therapy for me.  It helps me stay present.  When Iโ€™m in the kitchen, I can focus on just that.  I cook dinner almost every night, and itโ€™s become one of my favorite ways to retreat.  Itโ€™s not just about the food.  Itโ€™s about the calm that comes with creating something nourishing.

If I have the energy towards the evening time, Iโ€™ll go through my skincare routine.  That ritual, of caring for my face, makes me feel human.  It gives me an extra boost of self-confidence and genuinely makes me feel better about myself.

But honestly? Sometimes just being in solitude is enough.  Itโ€™s sacred to me, and I donโ€™t take it for granted.  My world is too fast and overwhelming most of the time, so I treasure the time I get to spend in silence with myself.

Self-care isnโ€™t always a thing of beauty.  Itโ€™s sometimes just surviving the day.  Itโ€™s choosing rest over productivity.  These are my ways.  And Iโ€™ve learned to stop apologize for doing the little things that bring me comfort.

This is what care looks like for me: a quiet meal, a lit candle, the comfort of being alone, a hot shower, and a baseball game humming in the background.

Itโ€™s in these moments where I feel like my true self and at peace.

โ€œSelf-care doesnโ€™t have to be loud. Sometimes itโ€™s just choosing yourselfโ€”over and overโ€”in the quiet.โ€
