Discovering My Soul Flavor: The Duality of Sweet and Sour

If my soul had a flavor, it would be caramelized lemon.

That perfect combination of:

  • Zesty boldness
  • A little tartness
  • Sweet at the core
  • Deepened by heat

The kind of flavor that makes you stop for a second. It’s surprising. Maybe even a little misunderstood—but it lingers in your memory. It’s not just lemon, or caramel, but that perfect meeting of the two. Both familiar and unexpected all at once. Caramelized lemon just feels like me.

Where the Sweetness Lives

I’m genuinely sweet. Not to sound pretentious, but it’s true. I care deeply for others. I always have. I feel things intensely and notice the smallest shifts in people:

  • The way someone’s smile doesn’t quite reach their eyes.
  • A voice that sounds a little more tired than usual.
  • A story you told me months ago that I’ll quietly check back on.

That’s the sugar. The warmth in me. It’s the little kindnesses, the quick gentle words. It’s just being there without needing the spotlight, but still somehow changing the whole flavor of the moment.

A Citrus Spark

Then there’s the tang. The part of me that gets animated and playful. The side that cracks sarcastic one-liners and leaves everyone laughing.  Such as doing an over-the-top impression, or tossing out a perfectly timed quip that no one sees coming. I often surprise people, and myself, when that part of me shows up.

It’s also my adventurous part. The one that’s curious, open to new things, and willing to step outside the familiar. That lemony brightness gives the sweetness its life. It’s what reminds me I can be vibrant too.

The Depth in the Bite

And then there are the slightly burnt edges. I’m sharp, bold, and sometimes misunderstood. There’s a bit of a bite to me. I’m emotionally sensitive, so when I feel shamed, dismissed, or unseen, my defenses flare.

I’ll admit, my irritation sometimes comes out stronger than I intend. I think it’s from overthinking everything, replaying conversations in my head like I’m stuck on a loop. It’s not the prettiest part of me, but it’s real, and a part of my flavor.

Bitter, Bright, and Becoming

Caramelized lemon isn’t one-dimensional—and neither am I. It’s been through something. It’s been transformed by heat.

  • Sweetness turns richer under pressure.
  • Sharpness softens into comfort.
  • Bitterness gains depth and purpose.

That’s me too. I’ve burned out, cracked, and healed. And every time, I’ve come out a little more myself. So, if my soul had a flavor, it wouldn’t be perfect. But it would be real. And it would be delicious.

What flavor would your soul be?

Grilled Veggies with Caramelized Lemon Dressing

There’s something magical about the way lemons transform on the grill. Charred until their edges caramelize and deepen in flavor, they’re then squeezed into olive oil, whisked with herbs, and kissed with a touch of honey.
Course: Side Dish, Snack

Ingredients

For the Veggies
  • 1 zucchini sliced into rounds
  • 1 yellow squash sliced into rounds
  • 1 red bell pepper cut into strips
  • 1 red onion cut into wedges
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
For the Caramelized Lemon Dressing
  • 2 lemons halved
  • ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, or basil
  • salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Equipment

  • 1 Grill or Grill Pan

Method

  1. Grill the lemons:Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Place lemon halves cut-side down and cook for 3–5 minutes, until the flesh is charred and caramelized. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Grill the veggies:Toss the veggies in olive oil, salt, and pepper. Grill for 8–10 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are tender and slightly charred. Set aside.
  3. Make the dressing:Squeeze the grilled lemons into a small bowl or jar. Add olive oil, honey, mustard, garlic, and herbs. Whisk or shake until combined. Taste and adjust salt and pepper.
  4. Serve:Arrange grilled veggies on a platter or bowl. Drizzle with the caramelized lemon dressing. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Add cooked quinoa or rice for a hearty version.
Top with feta or goat cheese for extra creaminess.
