Finding Confidence in Your Own Pace
It’s hard to live in a world where it’s so easy to measure ourselves against others. I’ve personally experienced that rather intently. Throughout my life, I always felt like I was a few steps behind everyone else—and that if I didn’t catch up, I’d be left out. I’ve always had a fear of being left out or not being up to par in society. I’d feel so ashamed of myself. My inner critic would always get the best of me, attacking my every whim. Things were out of focus; I saw through a lens of doubt and uncertainty.
One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was this: “Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.” This truly hit me in the gut. I had been struggling with feeling behind—behind in my career, behind in relationships, behind in life milestones. I’d often scroll through my phone, looking at people’s photos and videos, thinking, “Why does everyone else have it figured out, and I don’t?”
But when I really sat with those words, I realized how unfair I was being to myself. I realized that it isn’t healthy to compare your life to someone else’s. Just because I’m “behind” in someone’s eyes doesn’t mean that something is wrong with me. It just means that I’m doing things at my own pace, on my terms, and it truly doesn’t matter what others think. I’m living my best life in ways that are true to me, and that’s the most important lesson I learned from that advice.
Now, whenever I start something new—whether it’s writing, learning a skill, or even working on my mental health—I remind myself that I’m allowed to be a beginner. Besides, everyone was a beginner at some point, and it doesn’t matter when you choose to start, so long as you’re staying true to yourself. Some move fast, others prefer a slower pace, and that’s perfectly acceptable.
I believe that beginnings are beautiful in their own way. They’re full of possibility, fresh energy, and lessons that will shape the path ahead. And the middle? That only comes with time, persistence, and showing up for yourself consistently. I’ve learned there is no time limit on the things you choose to do in life. I realize that I’m not too late and I’m not less than. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be in this journey.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.”

Comparison is the thief of joy so I hear.
