Why Silence Boosts My Productivity

Daily writing prompt
What do you listen to while you work?

As much as I hate to admit it, I can’t listen to anything while I’m working.  When I switch my brain into work mode, I need complete silence in order to focus.  Any background noise makes it really hard for me to pay attention to what I’m doing.

Having ADHD means that my brain is already batting a million distractions, and noise just seems to make it worse.  My thoughts get tangled up in all the extra sounds, and it makes it difficult to concentrate.

I know a lot of neurodivergent people find that listening to music or podcasts actually helps them concentrate, and I honestly admire that so much.  I wish so badly that I could do the same.  I try sometimes, but my attention span is that of a goldfish.

I just get pulled away by the smallest noises, muttered words, or even the slightest change in volume.  Before I know it, I’m completely thrown off track, struggling to find my way back.

When I’m alone and I have free time, I love listening to music or podcasts.  It’s comforting and soothing for me.  It helps me to unwind and forget about the world for a moment.  But that’s the key, it only works when I don’t have to focus on a task.

For me, work requires a quiet mind and a quiet space.  Silence becomes this necessary backdrop that lets me dig deep into what I’m doing with the extra noise competing for my attention.

I’m learning to accept that my best work happens in silence.  It’s much easier to achieve something without the noisy distractions that so many others find helpful.  It might not be the norm for everyone, but It’s what truly works for me.

“Silence isn’t empty. It’s full of answers.”
